Above photo shows gas filtration process. 

When gas enter in to the purification system, firftly it is purified by “Primary dust filter", then " media bed" ( impreganted activated carbon, impregnated activated alumina or others) will purify it, after " final dust filters" , we will get purified air. 

After 12 month, media needs to be renew.
